iPhone Japan: Name Secured, 3G on the Horizon
March 27, 2008 Category: Apple 1 Comment »
Japan deployment of the coveted Apple iPhone has been hampered by network technology and naming rights. In a recent press release, Apple has finally cleared the first gateway to Japan, they have "reached a friendly agreement" with Aiphone, based out of Nagoya, over naming rights. This issue was not the English spelling of ‘iPhone’ and Aiphone’, but the Japanese for each is exactly the same. With the trademark out of the way, the only way Apple can launch an iPhone in Japan is to release a 3G version. (Japan doesn’t use GSM networks used by current iPhones) With so much effort, this must be a good sign of 3G-iPhone-goodness soon to come. [Digital World Tokyo]
