The popular, barcode-like QR code craze sweeping through Japan, and now the West, is releasing yet another breakthrough, Voice QR.  Currently, when the code is scanned, the end-user can be connected to URL-based information like video or audio media that streams in from the Internet to say, their mobile phone.  This new code works by "tweaking the data in each black and white square to contain a brief snatch of audio and a simple image."  This would be nice for those that live in the Internet-and-mobile-phone-backwards U.S. who can’t get Wifi access or pay for expensive data plans from cell phone carriers.

Although, the three companies pushing the technology will have to work with headset provides to install the new software, the "consortium sees Voice QR Codes delivering multi-media jingles from posters, books and product packaging."  I don’t think it’s a horrible idea myself, especially if, in the future, the limit can be increased past two seconds.  Imagine if you could serve up only the ads you are interested in by simply scanning the code and hearing the quick jingle.  Or, another idea that came to mind while I was hiking this weekend, a new system to give historical information and such while on tours or hiking or even just walking through the city, without needing an Internet connection. If you haven’t noticed, I have joined the craze and put up the QR code that will link to M Dashboard when scanned. Not that I’ve done any testing, but perhaps some of you would be interested.  Here is a link to the Kaywa Reader.  It looks like it should work, even in the U.S., so give it a try and let me know how it goes. -M
