OSX On a Samsung Q1 UMPC?

April 17, 2008    Category: Apple   No Comments »

Yup, it’s true.  Someone was actually about to install Apple’s latest OS onto a Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium UMPC.  The amazing this is that the device’s seven inch touchscreen is actually functioning–although some calibration issues still need to be worked out.  Touting a 1.33 GHz Core Solo and the 2 GB of RAM, the Q1 apparently fares pretty well running the OS.  The reason for doing all this?  Well, the guy simply wanted to "get a feel for what it would be like to carry and use a UMPC with Mac OS X."

Personally, I have been ignoring the UMPC and other MID (Mobile Internet Device) market because I can’t stand the Microsoft OS offerings they come with.  This mod is definitely a step in the right direction for functional Apple tablets. Hopefully, some popularity and success with this, along with similar mods, will help push Cupertino to design a touchscreen computer or UMPC-like device. [Engadget > jkOnTheRun]

WWDC2008

June 9-12 will be the dates of Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.  It will be held in San Francisco at the Moscone West.  The conference provides all sorts of sessions on development with Apple products, and is also a popular platform for Jobs and co. to launch updates and new products.  I’m sure I won’t be the only one tuning in.  Hit the link to get more information about this years WWDC. 070706_iPhone_tiJapan deployment of the coveted Apple iPhone has been hampered by network technology and naming rights.  In a recent press release, Apple has finally cleared the first gateway to Japan, they have "reached a friendly agreement" with Aiphone, based out of Nagoya, over naming rights.  This issue was not the English spelling of ‘iPhone’ and Aiphone’, but the Japanese for each is exactly the same.  With the trademark out of the way, the only way Apple can launch an iPhone in Japan is to release a 3G version. (Japan doesn’t use GSM networks used by current iPhones)  With so much effort, this must be a good sign of 3G-iPhone-goodness soon to come. [Digital World Tokyo]

I posted about an earlier rumor of OLED being used in the 3G iPhone. Giz has very interesting points to counter the earlier rumor, and I do truly feel more that way, but what can I do, I’m an optimist. However, I’ll add some further spin. (DO NOT BELIEVE THIS, IT HAS NO MERIT AND IS A WHAT IF…) Maybe, Apple wants to keep the current iPhones at the same price range when iPhone 2.0 is released in 2008. Thus, they are able to sell a more advanced iPhone–even with infant technology–for a higher price. Haha hope my conspiracy theory keeps you thinking. Let me know in the comments if you would like to see more crazy theories. [Gizmodo]

iphone In an interview with the iPod Observer, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney reports that he has come by some interesting new rumors about the upcoming 3G-capable iPhone 2.0.  The first is that Apple is supposedly ordering another 10 million next-generation phones on top of the 10 million first-gen phones Cupertino has set as their sales goal for 2008.  Such aggressive ordering and goals from Apple could mean the original iPhone will be sold at drastically lower prices.  My thought, maybe even prices on par with current smartphones, around 200 USD with contract.  Dulaney also speculates that the new phone may use a Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display.  Since OLEDs don’t need a backlight, the phones would be slimmer and consume less energy, thus improving battery life.  Not too much more we can do now, but wait for the official release. On April 6, the Wisconsin Film Festival will show a documentary on the history of the Mac from its inception to the present. Dubbed “Welcome to Macintosh”, the film looks to be very interesting. Check out the trailers, the second one after the jump, and see if you are as intrigued as I am. [TUAW > Welcome to Macintosh]

Apple Store Status Widget

March 19, 2008    Category: Apple   No Comments »

statuswidget As you may have discovered, or read, when the Apple Online Store goes offline it is usually good news. How could the store being down be good?  Well, Apple takes their online store temporarily offline to put up new and/or update products.  They have been doing this for quite a while now, and Apple Online Stores around the world have been known to give hints as to new product information and releases for stores globally with only one country’s store going down.  This new widget, by Pingdom, pings all the Apple Store sites to check if they are online.  It makes looking for a closing a lot easier, and will probably take some load off the servers when people constantly refresh during an outage. This one will definitely be going up on my dashboard when I get home. [TUAW]

0114_china_mobile With Apple still in talks with Chinese carriers about bringing the iPhone to China, they have decided to go ahead with plans to build brick and mortar stores in China.  The first one to be constructed will be in Chaoyang district, on Sanlitun’s famous bar street.  The store will be 1000 square meters, concept designs and exact location are still unavailable.  This is actually the second location Apple wanted, and their preferred site will now be the second store, which is a 3000 square meter building, to be located on Qianmen Avenue, close to Tiananmen Square.  Qianmen Ave is currently undergoing $40 million renovations to include Ming-era architecture, and make the area more pedestrian-friendly for shopping, thus the delay.  All this activity could also mean good news for the iPhone in China; this is definitely a story you may want to follow if you are a looking for early hints. The new Larrabee chipset is set to launch as a graphics chip in the 4Q. But, what will this thing do by early next year? Well, it will act like a certain Sony console, which has a cell processor, that runs CPU and graphics functions from the same scalable processor.  Could the Macbook lines see this update right before the holidays?  I’d wager an early bet… [Engadget]

2008-03-18SoftUpdate.jpg

I was thrilled this morning when I found out the Safari 3.1 update was released–apparently, with page load improvements too. Along with the Safari update, there was also a security fix as well. Oh, and Safari 3.1 is also available for Windows XP and Vista users, if that even matters haha. Now go hit the little apple up there and get updating!
