Japan Once Again With Better Internet
April 2, 2008 Category: Internet No Comments »
Japanese company Oki (surprise suprise) has succeeded in testing a 160 Gbps Optical Regenerator that is capable of sending data from one side of the planet to the other, about 20,000km. (12,430 mi) Set for commercial release in 2010, this tech is currently able to send data between Tokyo and Osaka without a repeater in between. I’ll let you read the press release after the jump for more technical information; basically this technology reduces the number of repeaters needed to transmit the signal long distances, and blows away the previous 40 Gbps retransmission speeds the current ones cause. Just another reason I need to move to Japan, fueling my Internet addiction. Checkout the OKI link for some diagrams. [Akihabara News > OSI]
Comcast and BitTorrent Update
March 28, 2008 Category: Internet No Comments »
Finally, I could read more into the Comcast and BitTorrent settlement from yesterday. Essentially, Comcast is playing nice in order to avoid the FFC hammer on net neutrality, and government mandates on internet providers regarding content filtering. However, there are now plans to monitor all connections by Comcast, not just BitTorrent traffic. Connections would only be scaled back for ‘heavy users’ during peak times. Maybe more equal, but I still think this is more snooping than morally and legally should be allowed. All is not over, as Kevin Martin, the FCC man-in-charge, still is unsatisfied, and at least wants "a commitment of a date certain by when it will stop this practice." I’ll be following along, especially since I got hit by Comcast the other day. Definitely not cool. [Giz]
Comcast and BitTorrent Feud Over?
March 27, 2008 Category: Internet 1 Comment »
Of course, my company filter keeps blocking the whole post because it has the word BitTorrent in it, but here is what I have gathered so far. Comcast is no longer going to have its filters "targeting BitTorrnet on the internet" and will supposedly "boost broadband capacity" to keep up with demand. In return, BitTorrent has pledged to make its software "more efficient". (big deal, they already try to improve efficiency since it increases speed) Apparently, there is also a catch, Comcast still plans to manage their traffic and is "working hard on a different approach that is protocol-agnostic during peak periods." Since I can’t read anymore into this while I’m at work, I am sure I will have an update later on [Engadget]
The 700 MHz Auction Has Ended

$19.5 billion is what it took to buy all the blocks on the 700 MHz spectrum up for auction–except the D-blcok, which did not meet the public reserve. Verizon appears to be the 50-statewide c-block for almost $4.8 billion, as predicted, and the government has a D-block to dispose of. Hopefully Verizon will put up their 4G and possibly GSM-based, LTE network as well. Or, nationwide access to Wifi for us internet addicted folks. [Engadget]

For all of you March Madness fans out there, good news, all of the games will be streaming to you live. The games are set to be aired on TV-over-Internet startup Joost. However, if the new application proves unreliable, the Official March Madness On-Demand site will have most of the games available for all that streaming goodness. Now you have no excuse not have the scoop on your bracket’s status in the office pool. [Lifehacker]
The Internet Connection of My Dreams
February 28, 2008 Category: Internet, Technology No Comments »
Researchers at Bell Labs in Villarceaux, France, have officially made my wildest wet dreams a reality. Using a lot of complicated, but wonderful equipment, they were able to reach speeds of 16.4 terabytes per second over 2550km. (1500 miles) This technology is being developed for the internet backbone, which apparently is looking at goal of 100 Gbps Ethernet connections. Now lets get this implemented. I need instant page loading and three second downloads. [Slashdot]
