Sony BMG to Bring DRM-Free All-You-Can-Eat in 2008?
March 25, 2008 Category: Media 3 Comments »
Sony BMG is finally getting it right! Head honcho, Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, has just been quoted saying Sony BMG is "working on an online music subscription service." What makes all of this so great you say? Well the following comments by Schmidt-Holtz are a start:
The simplest option would be a flat rate under which a monthly payment would provide access to our entire music catalogue for all digital players, including Apple’s Ipod
It is even possible that clients could conserve some songs indefinitely, that they would own them even after the subscription expired
This could definitely be a good sign of things to come. Supporting all players would be first I believe, and possible ownership after subscription could be a sign of DRM-free music. Sony also is in talks with other major distributors about their newfound philosophies. I’d say quite the opposite of the Sony ‘rootkit‘ fiasco of 2006. There are lots of rumors floating around these days about DRM-free and subscription-based music; I wonder who will be the first to reveal and make their strategy successful. [Engadget > CNN ]

What is Apple’s newest talks with record execs about? Well, Financial Times has the dirt you want to hear about. I will be intrigued to find out what Apple’s second place music sales does to the per handset price, in which Nokia already shells out $80 for the same kind of deal. Apple looks to be in position to make mucho dinero if all goes well; even better if they get their bid of twenty bucks a headset. Oh, and enjoy what I assume is Brian Lam’s Photoshop skills.
