Happy Tax Day! But, Not Really…

April 15, 2008    Category: Random   No Comments »

2006_02_ask_taxes It’s April 15th, everyone’s favorite day of the year.  Today is a holiday like no other, if you’re Uncle Sam.  This year however, you may get lucky and get something back, provided you file your taxes–and, you’re supposed to help the economy and spend it.  So get in your money or your late forms to avoid being fined on top of giving the Federal Government a third of your yearly earnings.

This morning I’d like to vent a little about the some of my issues stemming from tax code in the United States, and I hope you’ll voice some of your opinions in the Comments below.  Hit the jump for my .02 cents.

What’s in Your Future?

April 9, 2008    Category: Japan, Random   No Comments »

01_02 It doesn’t even take a daisy chain of supercomputers to determine your future.  All you need is Asovision’s Futurescope, and your path will be foretold. Bum bum bum!  The unit uses a personality test and your biorhythms to give you predictions about life and all that jazz.  I’m pretty interested to see how close it can be to reality.  Too bad the product page is in Japanese… [Tokyo Mango]

I’m Back!

April 8, 2008    Category: Random   No Comments »

I have returned from my travels to Tennessee.  Basically, four days finding all sorts of trouble and committing several acts of debauchery–all without feeding my Internet addiction. (I’ll take my damn medal now)  If you’re lucky, I’ll put up some video of the madness.  Hope ya’ll explored some other places to get all your "important" news.  Since I haven’t really slept too much since the beginning of last week, it may be tomorrow until I get back to work.  Anyway, I’ll post a Daily Read here in a few to get the ball rolling.  BTW, only took me just under two hours to catch up with Gizmodo, (I have to read every post) which makes me never want to go days without Internet again!

Wired’s Geekipedia

geekipedia

Here is an interesting thing I found on Wired today.  This is what Wired describes as Geekipedia:

The Wired World, from A to Z

Wikipedia doesn’t distinguish "need to know" from "didja know?" — and it’s lousy for browsing. That’s why we created Wired Geekipedia. Godwin’s law, Guitar Hero, Gates Foundation — you may know their definitions, but we tell you what they really mean.

Intrigued? I sure was.  After doing some reading, I came across ‘Googleverse’, and it is my favorite so far.  Check it out after the jump.

As a Mechanical Engineering major, this article quickly caught my eye. The points are fairly valid to me, but as most of my fellow engineering students know, they picked one of the hardest fields of study and know up front that it is not going to be a cakewalk. I will included my favorite one below because I have not met a soul in the engineering world that didn’t agree with this.

2. Other Disciplines Have Inflated Grades
Brilliant engineering students may earn surprisingly low grades while slackers in other departments score straight As for writing book reports and throwing together papers about their favorite zombie films.

pix-l-2 Here is an interesting concept from designer Jean Hong.  The Pix-L is like an UMPC for your beside, and would allow for that easy browsing of your favorite blog(s) from your bed.  Although a really cool concept and design, I hope you could put laziness aside for the bigger screen and keyboard of your laptop. Not Your Typical Cars

jet-powered-beetle.jpgIt is absolutely mandatory that you check out these ten unique vehicles that The Uber Review has put up. It ranges from a Pac Man car to a turbine-powered VW Beetle, which has a link to the creator’s site. (the engineering that went into it is damn pretty impressive) The video is a must watch, and I have put it up to make it all the easier. While you are over there checking out the cars, there is an interesting alarm clock post I recommend as well. [Giz > The Uber Review]

More Star Wars

starwarstowel This is shaping up to be quite the Star Wars afternoon. Here is a Star Wars collection of traditional Japanese Tenugui, which are commonly used as wash cloths, hand towels, or for construction workers, headwraps. At the moment, these are available in 10 different flavors. The author of the post points out what looks like R2-D2 flying over Mt. Fuji; I have to agree–classic. Follow the link to find the product page. [TOKYOMANGO]

Germany Gets It Right

March 11, 2008    Category: Random   No Comments »

How do you keep US jobs here in the States? Follow this German state’s lead and demand government subsidies be repaid. Nokia is closing a factory in the Ruhr region, and local government is demanding that $92 million in subsidies be paid back by March 31st before legal action is taken to secure payment. Good work Deutschland! Hopefully, Uncle Sam and other local communities will blow the dust off the ole thinking cap and apply these lessons to our own backyard. [Engadget]

My New Hero

ht_runner1_080305_ms Buster Martin caught my attention when I read an excerpt on Digg mentioning a 101 year old man running a half marathon, and stopping in the middle for a beer.  Turns out he still smokes, drinks and stays out with the fellas.  Here is the quick summary.  He is training for a marathon in London (that is right, 26.2 miles!), still works as a plumber, and has fathered 17 children.  The real clincher, he is part of a senior citizen rock group called The Zimmers.  They have a video on YouTube, and I will have it up when I get home.  Follow the link for the article.  Cheers Buster Martin!
