Finally, The USB Cooler for My Beer (And Coffee Warmer Too)
March 17, 2008 Category: Japan, Technology No Comments »
Drinking a ice cold beer is a tough thing to do when it’s sitting next to a first generation Macbook Pro, with all that heat coming off it. The only solution was to drink it fast. I am not against this, but sometimes engineering work takes a while to do, and being wasted by the midpoint can sometimes be a problem. However, this problem is no more, thanks to Sanwa. Their device not only provides the popular warming function, good for tea or coffee, but now offers a cooling mode as well. All you have to do is plug this into a spare USB port, and wah-la, heating and cooling for all of your favorite beverages. (Room temperature is also available at no extra charge) The Hot&Cold USB Coaster is only available online at the present time, and you have to bite $23 shipping from Asia. If it is still worth it, follow the link to order. [Akihabara News > GeekStuff4U]

Ambient Corp is demonstrating a new product, dubbed Audeo, it is capable of vocalizing nerve signals to the vocal chords. All the user has to do is wear the neckband and think about voicing their thoughts. The device will then pick up the signals and produce the desired sound(s), after some processing delay of course. Currently, this is able to produce 150 words and phrases, and there is phenome-based system in the works, which will allow the user to speak anything. Aimed at those who have lost the ability to speak say from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Audeo may also be the final solution to the annoying cell phone user sitting next to you on the [insert mass tranportation system]. Follow the link for a video of this amazing device in action. [Engadget]

Researchers at Bell Labs in Villarceaux, France, have officially made my wildest wet dreams a reality. Using a lot of complicated, but wonderful equipment, they were able to reach speeds of 16.4 terabytes per second over 2550km. (1500 miles) This technology is being developed for the internet backbone, which apparently is looking at goal of 100 Gbps Ethernet connections. Now lets get this implemented. I need instant page loading and three second downloads. [Slashdot]
Lasers from the Heavens!
February 7, 2008 Category: Technology No Comments »
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is working on the hardware to use satellites in space to collect solar energy. The Space Solar Power System would provide clean energy that is unhindered by interference from clouds and such that land-based systems are prone to. Expected to be in place by 2030, this system will power 500,000 homes by sending a laser to receiving stations on Earth. This sounds pretty awesome! Not trying to be a naysayer though, but I think they’re going to have to up the ante in order to produce a reasonable ROI. Here’s to lasers coming from the skies! [Pink Tentacle]
